Long Tail Keywords…I will start out by explaining what they are and then I will give you a checklist of what to do with them for better SEO on your site.

Long Tail Keywords are keyword phrases that are 3 (or preferably 4) words or more.

For example, a keyword would be the word “shoes”

A longer variation of that keyword would be “men’s shoes”

Long tail keywords would be “men’s dress shoes”, “men’s leather dress shoes”, “men’s black leather dress shoes made in Italy”, I think you get the pattern here.

So, what to do with the long tail keywords you have chosen for your niche? (Remember to do proper keyword research first!)

Use long tail keywords for about 20-40% of your anchor texts linking back to your website

Use long tail keywords on your blog pages and posts for easier ranking on Google’s top 10

Use long tail keywords within your ezine articles and other article marketing efforts

Long tail keywords help you harvest the low-hanging fruit in internet marketing. In other words, the 1 or 2-word keywords have such high competition from established mega-websites, that you could spend years trying to rank for them. Instead, go for the low-hanging fruit. There’s a lot out there just waiting to be harvested. By you…

Happy harvesting!

For all you newbies, there are some linking manners you need to be aware of. Not just because its mannerly to do so, but also because your links won’t be approved if you don’t use your manners.

Here’s today’s link manner: Don’t put a link to your website within your blog forum comment. At least, don’t even try to do it on the first few posts. Just fill out the fields they give you. If a signature is allowed, then you can put it in the signature. Otherwise, be happy with what they offer you.

Make sure your posts are valuable comments. Don’t just put “nice post” or something vacuous like that!

You are trying to become a valuable member of their community.

Happy Linking,

Linking- please say you are not doing this. Many marketers go gung-ho with their linking efforts, meticulously using their keywords as anchor text for all their links.

Is this a good idea? No. Why not?

It’s not natural!

You want your links to look natural to the big G and not to look as if they’re all planted.

Natural linking would show a variety of anchor text for the linking. You still want your main keywords to be the anchor text most of the time, though. Just not all of the time.

So here’s what you do: Choose 3 keywords from your page. Your main keywords you would use for anchor text 60% of the time. The other 40% of the time should be divided between the other keywords you chose.

Happy linking!
